Gail Treasure – Wife by the Hour
“Julia” has been working as an escort to married men for ten years. She has loved the work, but knows it’s time for a change. At her final appointment before leaving to teach full time, she meets Alex and falls for him, deciding to extend their meetings through the summer. Alex offers to bring Julia and her daughter to the south of France for a few weeks so they can continue their relationship, and she decides to use the time to show Alex the future they can have if he leaves his wife and choses Julia instead.
Because Julia actually knows his wife. Twenty-five years ago, they spent a summer together as au pairs in the same small French town, and Julia has been holding on ever since.
The tagline makes this story sound like a classic love story with a twist. It’s definitely a love story, but not the kind you think. I actually love the direction it took, and the details about the business side of sex work was really interesting. I also appreciate the sex scenes and how they’re told both intimately (with Alex when feelings are involved) and from a more clinical or removed perspective (with other clients) to add a layer of professionalism.
We love a story that uplifts sex workers. Sex work is work, and this novel reminds us of that.
